Man struck officer, tried to swallow drugs.
A 21-year-old Wilmington,Delaware man was charged with striking a probation officer Tuesday while trying to avoid apprehension.
Devon Reed, of the 1700 block of Lancaster Ave., was in a New Castle,Delaware area home when it was visited by officers making a curfew check on a probationer who lives there, New Castle County,Delaware police said.
While checking the home, in the 100 block of Rose Lane, they found Reed sitting at a dining room table and asked if he had any weapons. Reed stood up, struck the probation officer in the back of his neck and fled, said Cpl. Trinidad Navarro, a county police spokesman.
Reed ran out the back door, encountered other officers and tried to eat a bag of crack cocaine, Navarro said. After Reed was arrested, a piece of crack was found in his lip that tested positive for cocaine, he said.
The probation officer was taken to a hospital to be treated for his neck injury.
Reed was charged with felony assault on a law enforcement officer and five other offenses. He was committed to Howard Young Correctional Institution after failing to post $8,600 secured bail, police said.
