OxyContin dealer sentenced to jail, faces deportation
A former Marblehead man has been sentenced to seven years in prison after pleading guilty in federal court to moving large quantities of OxyContin out of a business in Lynn, the U.S. Attorney's Office announced yesterday.
Jorge Gonzalez Medrano, 44, who once lived at 37 Smith St., came under scrutiny after another individual familiar with Medrano's dealings was arrested and decided to cooperate with prosecutors, according to court papers.
The witness agreed to wear a wire to record discussions about moving between 2,000 and 5,000 OxyContin pills, which were sold for $25 apiece, court papers say. Some of those discussions took place at an Applebee's in Danvers during the summer of 2006, according to an affidavit.
Medrano pleaded guilty in April to conspiracy, distribution and aiding and abetting charges. During a hearing Thursday afternoon, U.S. District Court Judge William Young sentenced Medrano to seven years in prison, followed by two years of supervised release.
Prosecutors alleged that Medrano operated J&G Enterprises in Lynn's Market Square, where a sign advertised "communication services" and "Internet music" but the real money came from distribution of narcotics.
In a sentencing memorandum filed by his lawyers, Medrano had sought a lesser sentence than federal guidelines provide, citing a serious heart condition that may require the 44-year-old to undergo a heart transplant. The memorandum also notes that Medrano, a native of the Dominican Republic, entered the country illegally in 1980, then obtained legal residency in 1988. He will be deported after completing his sentence.
The case was investigated jointly by the DEA, state police, and the Marblehead and Lynn police departments.
